 Murchison Falls

The largest protected area in Uganda is the 3893 km2 Murchison Falls National Park, which is home to 450 different species of birds, big animals, and forest primates. The world's longest river, the powerful Nile, travels 6500 miles from Lake Victoria to Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the center of the park for 120 km.

The 40-meter-tall, explosive Murchison Falls, where the Nile is pushed through a 6-meter opening in the rift valley escarpment, is the focal point of the park. Two very different rivers are divided by the Falls. The river rushes upstream along a rough 80-kilometer course that is dotted with rapids. The Nile runs subtly downstream to Lake Albert, where it empties into a vast papyrus delta.
